Then I'll begin
efore I had a name for the BUMP BAND we had already
started cutting my second solo album for Mercury Records
in 1980. JOHNNY LEE SCHELL had been in my band from my
first record, TROUBLEMAKER, and RICKY FATAAR joined
us on drums soon after. But we needed to find RAY OHARA,
a Japanese bass player living in Los Angeles before it became
great. He was the missing link in the chain and the band was
complete. We started recording at Shangri-La Studios in the
hills above Malibu immediately.
pset after a tough night trying to finish the vocals on
my song 'So Lucky', I went to bed exhausted. Kim woke up
to find me singing at the top of my voice, though I was fast
asleep! As a result I called the album BUMP IN THE NIGHT
which comes from an old Cornish prayer:

my band enough to try a couple of songs with us, with the
result being her respected album GREEN LIGHT. We became
BONNIE RAITT and the BUMP BAND after that, touring with
her for four years and having a righteous and riotous time.

CHEN on bass, DAVID KEMPER on drums, and guitarist PAUL WARREN
who 's touring with Rod these days , and who produced my 'LAST CHANCE
TO DANCE EP. Then CRAIG ROSS and JIMMY ASHHURST from the BROKEN
HOMES joined me and NICK VINCENT on drums to form the next BUMP
BAND, which was a great band, but Craig got a call from LENNY KRAVITZ
and he was gone. MARC FORD joined, but was soon nicked by the BLACK
CROWES. Then I got WILL MacGREGOR on bass, with MATT DOWNS on
guitar, but soon after I moved to Texas to escape L A and its state of mind.
USTIN proved to be the perfect place for a new BUMP BAND
featuring DON HARVEY on drums, 'SCRAPPY' JUD NEWCOMB on
guitar & vocals, and SARAH BROWN on bass. After a while GEORGE
REIFF replaced Sarah, and then MARK ANDES took over from
George. Check us out every Thursday at the Lucky Lounge in Austin.

ow, I first met and played with DON when we
backed RONNIE LANE on his 1990 Japanese tour. So
when I decided to get the hell out of Shakeytown
and move to Austin, he was the first man I called.
'SCRAPPY JUD' is one of the finest guitar slingers
in any town, and whether he's playing solo, with
BEAVER NELSON, or with us, he's not to be missed.
efinitely one of my better ideas was asking
GURF to produce my album BEST OF BRITISH. His
work producing Lucinda Williams, his guitar playing
and vocal harmonies made him the only man in town.
And when MARK ANDES joined on bass and vocals,
the Bump Band was complete !
